Outdoor Observational Art. 11/9/20
First Class did some observational drawing in our outdoor classroom last week, using chalk pastels. The class really enjoyed working outdoors and drawing things they could see, like the plants, wildlife, our school building and the bug hotel! We had some trouble with the wind, but the children wrapped their paper around a book to stop it from blowing away, and this solved the problem!
Their beautiful drawing work is now displayed in the corridor outside our classroom for everyone in the school to see!
Harvesting Sunflower Seeds. 18/9/20
Last Spring, we planted sunflower seeds in school, but due to the school's sudden closure in March, the plants were never sent home. Sarah C took care of them and planted them in the soil on the farm where she lives. They grew extremely well, in spite of several storms and strong winds. Several grew taller than 2 meters!
On Friday morning, Sarah C cut the heads off the ones that were ready to harvest and brought them in to school. We looked at them closely with the visualiser in the classroom, and the children could see how the sunflower seeds grow in the centre of the flower. Later when we were in the outdoor classroom, each group was given a flower or two, and they had the opportunity to harvest them. We found some tiny snails, and earwigs in the sunflowers, so we gave them a comfy new home in the bug hotel! We hope to share these sunflower seeds with everyone in our school by planting them next Spring, and allowing the whole school to watch them grow!
