Last October, the pupils in Sarah C's class got to meet a very special visitor. The children were learning about how to approach a dog slowly, using a quiet and gentle voice when near the dog, putting out their hand to let the dog sniff you before you pet it, and some children even got to pet Jackson's head!

On the 18th June, Junior Infants set off on their first ever school tour! We had a fantastic day visiting Explorium in Sandyford. Take a look at some of the activities we got up to!
This month, Junior Infants are learning all about Space. The Play Rota corner has been transformed into our very own space station, complete with two spaceships, space suits, a control centre, aliens, planets and lots more. We have been learning about the planets, about astronauts and about what it is like to live in a spaceship. We worked in groups to paint the solar system, including the planets, the stars, the Sun and the Moon. We learned a little about the astronaut Chris Hadfield, who has lots of great videos about living on the space station. We also learned about the solar system by watching this song.
Last month, we got some new toys to try out during Play Rota. We loved the playboards and the fun magnets and were able to make some fabulous creations with them! In April, we were learning about athletics during our P.E. lessons. We practiced running, jumping and throwing. We learned to jump over small hurdles and even did some simple obstacle courses. Check us out below! We focus on a new word family each week and practice reading and writing words belonging to that family. We have done the -at family (hat, bat, sat etc.), the -et family (get, met, set etc.), the -an family (pan, man, tan etc.), the -en family (men, ten, den etc.) and the -ap family (map, tap, clap etc.)
We also visit the library most weeks and try to find our Tricky Words in the books we read. For the month of February, our socio-dramatic play theme was "The Vet". We created a mind map of things we already knew about the vet and added to it as we learned new information. We read some lovely stories about veterinary surgeries, the people we might meet there and the work that they do. We had a lovely time caring for sick or injured animals. Maybe we will be veterinary surgeons when we grow up! Recently in Laura's class, we have been exploring water play. First, we filled our sandbox with some clean water (with the help of Linda and Laura!). Then, we chose some interesting items to put into the water to play with.
We have been discussing how to keep our classroom safe during water play and how to clean up safely when play is finished. Check out some photographs of us in action! Laura's ClassOur theme for Play Rota for the month of January was "The Doctor". We created a mind map and read stories about this theme. We discussed the different people we might meet in the doctor's surgery and their various roles. We discussed why and when we might need to visit the doctor and the services they can provide.
We had a super time extending our learning in our very own doctor's surgery! Check us out! Our Play Rota theme for the month of January was the Optician. We learned about the work of an optician and why they are important. We learned about eye tests and tried on lots of different glasses and sunglasses. Just like in the Doctors' Surgery, there is also a receptionist in the Opticians - we are really good at this job! We have also been learning all about houses and homes. We discussed how all homes are different and drew a picture of our own home to show the class. We also built lots of houses during Play Rota. Check out some of our buildings! Last week, we reached the end of our Jolly Phonics sounds! We have done a great job at remembering all of the sounds and beginning to read words and simple sentences.
Here are a couple of games we played in class to help us continue to practice: Hanging Monkeys and Slides. Check out our performance! We recited a story and sang a song all about a snowflake. We worked really hard on it! We hope you enjoy it!
