On the first day back to school, the children in attendance were full of joy and zest wishing each other a happy new year! A brand new year, 2022. What would it be like? What were our wishes and hopes for this year? It was very exciting. We learnt about what 'new year resolutions' were and we spoke about how they were like goals for the new year. We thought of daring and fun goals for ourselves. Lisa is going to try and drink more water at school this year. If you see her remind her! Take a look at a few resolutions from Second Class below. We thought of new goals for ourselves, home and school. We need to work hard now to try and keep them! We have been learning about fractions in Second Class. We LOVE maths and we really loved making our own unique fraction pizzas! We know that fractions are parts of a whole.
Some of us did whole pizzas. Some of us did pizzas split equally into two equal parts (halves). Some of us did pizzas split equally into four equal parts or quarters. And some of us did pizzas split in 8 equal parts or eights. Take a look below and see if you fancy a slice or two! c",) Challenge: See if you can make your own fractions at home? Can you spot any around your home? Each pod worked collaboratively to design, create and decorate their own Chinese dragon. It was by no means easy and the children worked hard listening and compromising on different ideas, solving problems and supporting and encouraging one another through the project. On the last day of term, the children showed off their creations in a Chinese New Year parade with Niamh's class. We sang the song 'Chinese Dragon' and we had a lot of fun! Take a look at some photos below: Before the winter holidays, the children learnt all about the country China. The children loved using the class globe to find where China was and pinpointing it on their world maps. We went on a fantastic adventure to the Great Wall of China, to the forests to see the giant panda eating tonnes of bamboo, to the base of the very tall Mount Everest and to the wonderful capital city of Beiijing! We learnt about school life in China, typical yummy Chinese food and all about the Chinese new year. Take a look at some our projects below. We learnt so much about Italy and we were all begging Lisa to take us on school tour to ITALIA! We wanted to eat 'il cibo' (the food)! We wanted to explore the cities and the islands- Rome, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Sicily and Capri! We wanted to see the picturesque and incredible sights- the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna, Pompeii and the Vatican. There was so much to learn about and we were ready to hop on a plane together. For art, we were inspired by the famous Leonardo Da Vinci. We gave Mona Lisa a unique makeover and presented our art to the class! Take a look below.
We learned all about Diwali in Second Class in November. It was so special and interesting to learn about this five day Festival of Light which is celebrated around the world by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains including some of our friends in class who celebrate this festival at home too. We were in awe and really enjoyed listening to the story of Rama & Sita, making our own clay diyas and creating beautiful rangoli patterns with chalk pastels.
The Giraffe is our restorative practice mascot in school because he has a ginormous heart and is so empathetic thinking about how others are feeling with it's very long neck! We are working hard in Second Class becoming a restorative class. Take a look at the giraffes we drew, designed and painted- we love them!
Snails galore have invaded Lisa's classroom! We must have at least 40 snails on the windowsill now! Today, we had great fun creating snails with clay! We were learning to roll the clay, pinch the clay and smooth out any wrinkles or creases in the clay! Our hands and tables were extremely messy but we got it all cleaned up. Take a look at a few snaps below! Oh what a magnificent month! We have done lots of super learning, had buckets of fun and we even elected a new representative for our the student council. Take a look at what has been happening in Lisa's Second Class below. An Election for Student Council Firstly, we had a great discussion on what the student council was and what characteristics we wanted to see in our class representative! We then chatted through how our election would take place fairly and democratically. Next, those who wished to go forward for election, got to work, thinking and writing about what they would they say in their speeches! When we were all set, children courageously spoke in front of their classmates! We were so proud of each other! Once we had heard from everyone, it was time to vote. It was so tense in the room. Next, Lisa announced the winner. Gaja was our brand new student representative. She was delighted!!! We congratulated her and Gaja thanked everyone! Well done Gaja! Why do some things sink and some things float? For science, we were wondering about why some things float and other things sink. We chatted about why we thought that some things float and we shared lots of our thoughts with each other. We thought about different materials, different shapes and examples in the real world. Next, we made predictions as scientists on whether certain objects would sink or float and we recorded this information in our copies. We then tested out the objects. We were really surprised about some of the objects. We chatted about density. We learned that objects that are more dense than water sink and those less dense float. |
